Training on Water, Hygiene and Sanitation in Emergency Situation in West and Central Africa

2iE is organizing from February 1 to 11, 2010 in partnership with UNICEF, Action Against Hunger, Doctors Without Borders, the International Red Cross and Crescent Network, CARE and OXFAM a training session on “Water, Hygiene and Sanitation in Emergency Situation in West and Central Africa”.

 
 

The training aims to build capacities of executives of NGOs, Red Cross, governmental and UN partners in West and Central Africa in terms of primary assessment, planning and implementation of activities related to water, sanitation and hygiene after a crisis/humanitarian disaster in emergency situation.

Trainees are equipped with skills to be able to:

  • Intervene in a humanitarian context in Central and West Africa
  • Achieve a primary assessment in an emergency context
  • Implement intervention in WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene) sector
  • Include cross-disciplinary actions in WASH (participation, community approach, vulnerable populations as HIV positive people, children, disabled, etc.), environment, protection (rights, security)
  • Coordinate WASH and other sectors (nutrition, shelter, health, logistics, etc.) taking into account their actions, interactions and challenges
  • Develop a contingency plan

 

 

About twenty participants from UN specialized agencies (UNICEF, WHO, HCR, etc.), ministries in charge of water, sanitation and public health programs, technical offices and public health services of local governments as well as NGOs attended the training.

The training includes presentations, practical work/case studies/field visit as well as experience exchange and technical workshops.

Trainees will be trained on the following modules:

  • Module 1: humanitarian context in West and Central Africa
  • Module 2: stakes and techniques for primary assessment in an emergency situation
  • Module 3: planning an intervention in WASH sector
  • Module 4: implementing an intervention in WASH sector
  • Module 5: considering cross-disciplinary factors in WASH actions
  • Module 6: coordinating action within WASH and other sectors (health, nutrition, shelter, logistics, etc.)
  • Module 7: efficiency assessment of an intervention in WASH sector
  • Module 8: implementing a contingency plan
